Can I Get in The SENTRI Line at The Airport With a Record?

July 6, 2017

If you’re like many of us, you get tired of waiting in long U.S. Customs lines at the airport when you arrive from another country. Screaming kids, not so friendly agents and having just arrived from a long flight from another country makes for quite the headache. But what about those alternative lines that are designated for members only and move much faster than the regular line? This is the SENTRI line, and you may be wondering, can I find a way to join this members-only line so I can get through this annoying process faster? If you have a criminal record, the answer is yes, and no.

What is the SENTRI line?

The SENTRI line, or Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection line is a security program that allows faster clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers. once they arrive in the U.S. The benefits of joining this program include:

  • Faster border crossing times
  • Dedicated lines to speed up travel and save long queue times
  • Quicker border inspection time
  • Fewer questions from border agents
  • Less stress when traveling with children

In order to apply, individuals must volunteer to go through a rigorous background check. The remaining steps for applying to the program include:

  • Completing and sending in the SENTRI application to U.S. Immigration and Visa Forms
  • Send in the required application processing fee
  • Your application will undergo thorough review and you will wait to see if you have been accepted into the program

I Have A Record, How Can I Still Join?

Unfortunately, applicants who have any criminal offense on their record will not be accepted into the program. This goes back to our recent statement that having a criminal record greatly affects your ability to travel, especially internationally. The easiest way to go about international travel and applying for the SENTRI program would be to expunge your criminal record. If you are eligible, expunging your record may improve your chances of being granted entry into foreign countries and into the SENTRI program.

The expungement process can be long and complex, as every individual’s case is unique. To learn more, contact our team of experienced of attorneys at 844-947-3732.
